Grew up in the Raleigh area, and went to school up in the Shenandoah. I totally understood why the Carolina guys and girls I grew up with loved the song, but somehow, inexplicably, it was a perennial crowd favorite at W&L...'twas rare to see a party where it didn't get played, and sung along to.

I think for a lot of us in the south, we all wish we could stay in our sleepy little small towns and still find a way to be well off. Unfortunately, we all end up moving to the city just for the opportunity to make somethin of ourselves. I, for example, would love to go back to Winchester, but there's no opportunities there. So I think this song reminds them of what they're giving up and for one brief moment, takes us back.
